Cabinets are an integral part of your new home design. Which means you want to choose a cabinet colour that you are going to love! So how do you ensure you are making the right choice? In this blog post I am going to go over a few great questions to ask yourself to help in choosing your cabinet colour.
How long are you planning on staying in this home?
If you answered that you will be selling your home in a few years, this may impact what colours you choose. Considering future buyers is key in this case because you want to appeal to most people.
A great choice for a timeless look would be white cabinets, which bring a bright and open look to any kitchen. White cabinets also make a beautiful neutral backdrop. You can see an example of white cabinets paired with a light blue island in our Manhattan Showhome in Midtown below. While there is a pop of colour to this kitchen, it is so subtle that it still appeals to the majority of people.
On the opposite side, if you plan on staying in your home for many years to come, this opens up more choice. If you are not considering future buyers, then you can make a more personal choice that speaks to you! You can choose to be bold when it comes to your colours and incorporate different textures as well. For example, this kitchen in our Kingston Showhome in Vermilion Hill shows how you can incorporate both colour and texture. The kitchen shows off a beautiful green paired with a warm wood texture. This home has these colours throughout, making the design feel seamless.
What design style speaks to you?
While this may seem obvious, asking yourself this question is crucial. Too often I hear clients say ‘I don’t know’ when I ask them what sort of design style they like. If you are unsure of what speaks to you, do your research! Look online at helpful resources like Pinterest or Houzz and see what images catch your eye. You may choose different colours based on design style. Like warmer tones for a traditional kitchen versus more cool tones for a modern kitchen. Below is a great example of what a modern cabinet choice looks like in our Delta Showhome in Vermilion Hill. The white cabinets and black backsplash bring a dramatic look to the kitchen, while playing to the French feel of the home.
How do you want your kitchen to feel?
The kitchen is the heart of the home, and where we spend a lot of time during our day. It is important to think about how you want your kitchen to feel. This is a tangent off the last question since it is related to the design style of the home. For example, do you want your kitchen to feel light and airy, warm and organic, striking and bold? Colours evokes emotion, so whatever colour you choose will create an emotional reaction. Look at the photo below of the Emerald kitchen in Glacier Ridge and ask what feeling you get when looking at this picture. To me, this kitchen evokes a warm and inviting feeling.
While thinking about the duration of your time in the home is important, your kitchen should speak to you! Ask yourself what design style you love, and how you want your kitchen to feel. Then find inspiration images to associate with that vision. After that, the fun begins when you get to start designing the kitchen of your dreams!
